Dining at The Black Bass Hotel
We visited the Back Bass Hotel for Sunday Brunch in January. The Black Bass is located on River Road in Lumberville. The restaurant is adjacent to the Delaware Canal and overlooks the Delaware River. The building itself dates back to the 1700's. Valet parking is available in a lot across River Road from the hotel. Use common sense when crossing the road as it is quite busy times and the road bends north and south of the hotel. Throughout the building you'll notice artwork such as guinea fowl perched above the window and cats peeking out from painted draperies . Reservations are definitely a necessity for Sunday Brunch. If possible, try to make sure you're seated in the larger dining room overlooking the Delaware river. There is additional seating in the small room adjacent to the smoke free bar. That particular room has its own charm with the rich dark paneling and a fireplace. The bar itself a has what appears to be pewter finishings. There's also a baby grand piano tucked away in a corner. Throughout the building you'll find mementos of England and the Royal Families. According to the brochure the hotel and its owners remained loyal to England during the War of Independence. The tables in the main dining room are slightly crowded. However that is offset by the great view of the Delaware River. Speaking of the tables, take note of their construction. The bases are made from the vintage sewing machines salvaged from a local building. As soon as we were seated, a server brought champagne which is included as part of the brunch. The adjoining room offers an omelet station, Eggs Benedict , crepes and waffles. The other room offers an assortment including: salmon, tortellini, chocolate bread pudding, chocolate mousse, and of variety of other pastas, salads, desserts and more. The cost for two adults and an 11 year old was about $75. It is well worth it. When you finished your brunch, you might want to take a walk just north of the building. There you'll find a pedestrian suspension bridge that crosses the Delaware river to Bulls Island State Park on the New Jersey side. It's a pleasant walk and it offers some excellent views of the river.
