We ate lunch at the Temperance house in the Edward Hicks dining room. The murals on the wall are in the style of Edward Hicks, a famous Quaker painter from Newtown. The dining room is far enough from the bar that it a completely smoke free environment.

The atmosphere is colonial with wide floorboards and 2 fireplaces.  I started off with the french onion soup ($5) served in a pewter bowl. In a word it was delicious. I ordered the shrimp stuffed with crabmeat (7) for the main course. The dish was baked to perfection with brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes on the side.  For desert I ordered the Piedmont which was a crispy hazelnut cracker with hazelnut mousse ($7). The serving size was small but that was balanced by the richness and taste.

The service was excellent. Our nine year old was with us and they are definitely kid friendly.

There is some on street parking available. There is also a municipal lot behind the stores directly across the street.  Downtown Newtown has a variety of shops in quaint storefronts.

The Temperance House is a lovely restored colonial restaurant with topnotch seafood to match. It has wide floor boards wood tables, and Windsor chairs, two stone fireplaces. Farm murals decorate the walls.

The crab cake sandwich was delicious and so fresh. The french onion soup had perfect texture and flavor. The desserts were marvelous from chocolates truffles, trio mousse, and tiramisu.

(July 2004 mini review) The Temperance House dates back to the late 1700's. The establishment is much larger than it appears to be from the outside.  There is a large room in the rear that is perfect for banquets or business meetings.

I have attended the Newtown Business and Professional Association breakfast meetings when they were held at The Temperance House. The food was excellent and so was the service.

In addition to the restaurant, The Temperance House is also an inn. There are a number of rooms ranging in size from cozy to spacious. All of the rooms have recently been restored/renovated.
