In addition to the hundreds of specialty stores, they offer a nice holiday atmosphere.

To begin with, the village is lit with literally a million or so lights on the trees and buildings. As you walk around, you are treated to an ever changing view. The Gazebo houses a collection of Gingerbread and Marzipan houses. We went this friday and there was no line to get in, but the movement inside the Gazebo was pretty slow. It was worth it though in order to see some great designs.

There is a stand selling warm cider on the square in the center of the village. The warm it in a copper kettle over a hardwood fire. If you are downwind, the smell of the fire just adds to the charm. (IE just enough to notice but not overpowering). You can hear Christmas music througout the square area. The winery was offering complementary wine tasting.

So, if you are looking for something to do with the kids for the Holiday season, then consider a ride to Lahaska.

If you go, make sure you wear good walking shoes and clothes that are warm enough for the weather. Also, if you park in the lot near Earl's Prime note that a lot of the spaces are reserved for Hotel guests and subject to towing. One final thought is that it might pay to bring a backpack if you are planning on purchasing a number of items. Even if you aren't planning to purchase it's hard to avoid it as you go throught the stores.

Dining Earl's Prime in Peddler's Village

We visited Peddler's Village to see the Christmas Lights and to do a little shopping. We started out with Lunch at Earl's Prime. The Restaurant is located in Peddler's Village.

The Exterior and Interior is done in a modernistic style with a lot of burnished metal trimmings. Overall it is tasteful.

Lunch was being served from 1 to 3. It's a lot more reasonable than the dinners there and a lot less crowded. We were seated promptly and greeted by a very friendly and efficient waitress.

The lunch menu isn't all that extensive. We ended up splitting two Turkey Clubs between the three of us. It turned out to be more than enough. I ordered a cappucino which was $5 but worth it.

For desert, Kathy and Chris had the Key Lime Pie. It was a generous slice of really good pie. I ordered the Gelato/Sorbet Sampler with Hazelnut and Pistachio Gelato. I was expecting two golf ball sized portions and instead got a pair of tennis ball scoops which were excellent.

In summary, it's a great place to go for lunch. When we passed by later in the evening, there was a waiting line and the place was jammed.

City Kitchen in Southampton PA

A new place opened up in Southampton called City Kitchen. It's located at the site of the old Maggios in the strip mall at the corner of Second Street Pike and Industrial Boulevard. It's nothing like the old Maggios.

The interior is done in a semi modern style with a lot of chrome and steel sculptures.

When we walked in we were greeted by the General Manager and the Owner. We were seated and served quickly. The menu is decidedly Italian. The first time in, we were just looking for a late snack and had come well after the dinner crowds. They bring out bottled Southampton water (It sounds corny but it does work for a lot of reasons). We split a veal parmesian and a Caesar Salad. Both were excellent. They server the Marinara sauce on the side.

Desert was a real treat. They have a great selection of some really excellent gelato.

The combination of service and food along with our busy holiday schedule led us back twice more that week. Every time the owners and manager were greeting all of the guests and checking at the tables. It does get busy at prime time so plan ahead. The place is BYOB. If you don't want to do that, they have some great Italian sodas and lemonade to choose from.

When we went there tonight our son was with us. He had his ipod touch and noticed that they offered free Wifi. I don't think you would want to sit there during a crowded dinner hour with your laptop but it would probably be great for a business lunch.

Oh, I forgot to mention the music... it's a taseful blend of Italian oriented music including Sinatra and Connie Francis.. It's not overdone, just a nice background.

SUMMARY - If you like an slightly upscale pizzaria/italian place, give it a try...

Slate Bleu in Doylestown

We have been meaning to try Slate Bleu in Doylestown for a while now. The other night we had a chance to drop in.

The restaurant is located in the Doylestown Agricultural Center. There is a decent amount of parking in the area depending on the time of day.

We only stopped in for desert at about 9pm on a weekday. The restaurant was pretty much empty at that time. We ordered the Chocolate Mousse and I ordered a cappucino. The service was great, the desserts excellent and the coffee great. The desserts were about $8 each and the cappucino was $8.

We found that they have $12 three course luncheon specials which gives us a great reason to return.

In summary, it's a nice French restaurant with friendly service and a pleasant atmosphere.

The Waterwheel in Doylsetown

We recently stopped in at the Waterwheel in Doylestown. It's located near the Airport.

The building is charming. As the name implies, it is an old mill converted to a restaurant. The upstairs has a lot of civil war and revolutionary war prints. One that struck me was Joshua Chamberlain at Little Round top.

We sat and checked out the menu in the main dining room. We were looking for something lighter so we headed down to the bar in the basement. That room is a little less cozy or a little more institutional. Neither of us were overwhelmed by the food. It is pretty much typical bar food on the downstairs menu. I should note that we have some good friends who rave about the food there so it might have just been an off night or it might have been us. It could also be that they eat upstairs in the main dining room and not downstairs.

There were three Televisions with some annoying post election coverage (That isn't the restaurant's fault I know). I was electioned out so I just shifted to the other side of the table.

I had a chicken parmesian with spagetti that was OK. Kathy had a crab appetizer. For desert I tried the chocolate mouse which was great. The service was great considering one person was working the bar and the tables (it was the day after election)

Summary - If you are looking for a nice atmosphere and a decent meal, I'd try the main dining room.

The Yardley Inn - Lunch and dinner

We've been stopping by The Yardley Inn on a fairly regular basis. It's right on river road in Yardley. If you get the right seat you can get a nice view of the Delaware River.

If you go for lunch they have a 3 course special for about 12 bucks. I usually go with the Ceasar Salad which is made with thin slices of cheese. It is a decent portion and goes well with the rolls. For the Main Course, I've tried the Crabcakes, sauteed chicken and fish and chips. All have been great choices. Our favorite dessert is the Chocolate Mousse. The portion is generous and the Mousse is delicious.

In Summary, the lunch special is a great deal. They have a bit of a variation which we tried on a Saturday for an early bird special.

It's a good idea to call ahead for reservations.

I understand that the Inn will be undergoing renovations soon to raise it about 8 feet in an effort to negate the effects of the periodic flooding of the Delaware River.

Dinner at Tony's Place Bar and Grill in Ivyland

Tony's Place Bar and Grill is located at Bristol Road and Greely Avenue in Ivyland Pa.

The dining room is simply decorated with a hardwood floor, subdued lighting and ample space between the tables. There is a patio dining area during the season.

Reservations are a good idea. We stopped in on a Saturday around 6 pm. The wait for an inside table was about 15 minutes. The staff was very friendly and efficient. Our son ordered Chicken fingers. I ordered the Vodka Penne Pasta (~$18) which was pasta, asparagus and crab meat in a vodka sauce. That was delicious. My wife ordered a Stuffed Pepper appetizer (~$12) stuffed with crabmeat, pancetta and ricotta cheeses and asparagus with marinara sauce. That was something I'm going to go back for after a taste. For desert I tried the brownie sundae which was very good. It was sweet but not too sweet. The brownie was served warm with ice cream on top. My wife got the creme brulee and our son chose warm caramel apple pie with ice cream. The deserts were about $5 each.

All told, dinner ran about $60. We didn't order any drinks but they do have a nice wine and beer selection.

The inside is completely non smoking but there is smoking on the patio. If you cannot tolerate smoke be sure to not sit near the doorway to the patio as smoke seems to get blown back in.

If you go

Reservations are a good idea during peak times

Parking is tight but they do offer valet parking. There is almost no neighborhood parking available.

They do have game nights and afternoons.
